The Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Malaya is the oldest medical school in the country and boasts the largest selection of postgraduate clinical and research-based programmes. Our experienced and enthusiastic academic staff, coupled with the advantage of a large, busy tertiary care teaching hospital on site, allow us to offer a wide range of high-quality teaching and research programmes. We are proud to offer a total of 22 clinical specialty programmes, eight postgraduate programmes by coursework, three programmes by research and two programmes by mixed mode. Furthermore, the Faculty is the only medical faculty in the country to offer academic programmes in two niche medical areas - Master of Medical Physics and Master of Medical Science (Regenerative Medicine). This places us as the faculty that offers the highest number of postgraduate programmes, and therefore the highest postgraduate population in UM.
The Faculty of Medicine at UM is proud to have spearheaded the National Postgraduate Medical Curriculum (NPMC) project. This mammoth effort which began in 2014 aimed to create and deliver a unified and structured curriculum for training specialists across the country. As part of the Dean’s Council project, all relevant stakeholders, namely Ministry of Health, Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysian Medical Council, Malaysian Qualifications Agency, Academy of Medicine and all specialty groups in the country were involved. On 27th August 2021, we launched 12 specialties as part of this project with a further eight the following year. Under this curricula, clinical training and assessments were improved and strengthened to ensure our trained specialists are of high quality and meet the set standards.
