The Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1964, with Associate Professor Winifred Danaraj as its first Head. Initially focused on public health in rural areas, the department required undergraduate students to conduct health surveys in remote districts. Over time, this evolved into the Community Residency Programme (CRP) and Organisation and Management of Health Services (OHMS).
The department introduced the Postgraduate Diploma of Public Health (D.P.H.) in 1953, supported by the World Health Organization, designed to suit conditions in the Far East. The Master of Public Health Programme began in 1973, and since then, over 1,500 graduates have emerged from the department’s programmes, including MPH, MEpi, MMSc, DrPH, and PhD. These graduates now hold key positions in the Ministry of Health, universities, and international organisations such as the WHO and Médecins Sans Frontières, making impactful contributions globally.
