Thank you for your interest in spending your elective period with us at the Faculty of Medicine (FOM), Universiti Malaya (UM), MALAYSIA. The Elective Programme consists of a clinical placement with the posting/s of your choice. You will be given an observer status where you will experience (alongside our own students) the everyday management of patients under our care.
You will be given the opportunity to join the teaching and learning activities of our MBBS programme during the period of your elective. You may be expected to attend lectures and tutorials as well. A supervisor will be appointed to you to evaluate your performance during your elective placement and to ensure your general well‐being.
English is the medium of instructions for our MBBS programme and is used during all teaching and learning sessions. However, Malaysian patients are a mixture of different races and may speak English, Bahasa Malaysia (the National Language), Mandarin (and many different Chinese dialects), Tamil and Hindi. Available clinical postings for your elective are Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Oncology, Opthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Paediatrics, Pathology, Primary Care, Psychological Medicine, Surgery and Trauma & Emergency. Certain clinical postings are only available for selected period of time.
These include translational, fundamental or epidemiological research. You may undergo your research elective posting with the departments of Anatomy, Medical Microbiology, Molecular Medicine, Parasitology, Pharmacology, Physiology or Social & Preventive Medicine.
The duration allowed for an elective placement is as follows:
During your clinical elective period, you will be attached to University Malaya’s teaching hospital named University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) (www.ummc.edu.my). UMMC is the largest teaching hospital in Malaysia and has more than 1000 beds with more than 1 million patients cared for each year, giving you ample opportunity to observe the practice of medicine in a safe and supervised environment. UMMC is connected to FOM, creating a large complex dedicated to teaching, learning, research and health care.
If you are undergoing a research elective, you will be attached to the different departments at FOM (medicine.um.edu.my), depending on the topic of your research interest.
Accommodation is not provided. However, you may refer to our Student Affairs Division website (https://hep.um.edu.my/) for details regarding availability of on-campus and off-campus accommodation (student housing).

1). Do I require a visiting visa to enter Malaysia?

2). If I am not a medical student, can I still apply for an elective placement?
The Electives for Medical Students is only open to current registered medical students in their clinical
years (Year 3 and above). For other clinical/research/industrial attachments, please go to our website
for further details.
3). Can I be exempted from paying the elective fees?
If you are a student from universities with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UM, please
contact us for further details.
4). Would I be able change my elective placement once I have received an offer from FOM?
FOM will not entertain any changes to an application that had already been processed.
5). I have started my elective placement but for some reason am unable to continue. Would I be able to
get a refund?
FOM will not refund any part of the sums paid for the elective placement.
6). I have started my elective placement in one clinical posting but would prefer to do a different
Elective placement in another clinical posting. Would I be allowed to do that?
FOM will not entertain any changes to an elective placement that had already started.
7). What languages are spoken in Malaysia?

8). What is the minimum and maximum duration of the elective period?
The minimum duration is 2 weeks and the maximum duration is 8 weeks.
9). What if I fall sick during my electives?
You need to submit a health and travel insurance that is applicable in Malaysia in your name that covers
the duration of your elective.
