Elective Postings

During your clinical elective period, you will be attached to University Malaya’s teaching hospital named University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) (www.ummc.edu.my). UMMC is the largest teaching hospital in Malaysia and has more than 1000 beds with more than 1 million patients cared for each year, giving you ample opportunity to observe the practice of medicine in a safe and supervised environment. UMMC is connected to FOM, creating a large complex dedicated to teaching, learning, research and health care.

If you are undergoing a research elective, you will be attached to the different departments at FOM (medicine.um.edu.my), depending on the topic of your research interest.

Universiti Malaya has its own bus service that has several routes. Routes A, B and E service the areas within the UM’s campus. Route C services Bangsar South/ Pantai Dalam (a nearby residential and eating area). Route D services Sections 16 and 17 (also a nearby residential area, including the International House, see below). Go to www.hep.um.edu.my to learn more.

Accommodation is not provided.  However, you may refer to our Student Affairs Division website (https://hep.um.edu.my/) for details regarding availability of on-campus and off-campus accommodation (student housing).

1. All applicants must fill the admission as a clinical or research elective student form [FPU76/2019] (S1) and submit at least 6 months prior to the date of the elective period.
    
2. Your application must be accompanied by a confidential supporting statement from the Dean’s Office or Registrar of your medical school. Please provide the name, position and contact details of the Dean or the representative of the Dean of your medical school in your application. FOM will contact your medical school for the supporting statement. While the supporting statement is confidential, you will need to inform your medical school regarding your application and that FOM will contact your medical school once you have submitted a complete application form.
    
3. You must submit a health and travel insurance applicable in Malaysia in your name within 30 days from the date of the offer letter. It should cover the duration of your elective period.

5. Your application will be processed and if you are successful, an offer letter will be send to you via email. This process may take up to 8 weeks. You may contact us at email: fomelective@ummc.edu.my for any queries.
    
6. While all efforts to accommodate your request would be made, FOM reserve the right to change your clinical elective posting (before or after obtaining FOM offer letter) or deny your request for an elective placement.

Research Elective/ Attachment

1). Do I require a visiting visa to enter Malaysia?
Please go to https://isc.um.edu.my for further information.

2). If I am not a medical student, can I still apply for an elective placement?
The Electives for Medical Students is only open to current registered medical students in their clinical
years (Year 3 and above). For other clinical/research/industrial attachments, please go to our website
for further details.

3). Can I be exempted from paying the elective fees?
If you are a student from universities with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UM, please
contact us for further details.

4). Would I be able change my elective placement once I have received an offer from FOM?
FOM will not entertain any changes to an application that had already been processed.  

5). I have started my elective placement but for some reason am unable to continue. Would I be able to
get a refund?
FOM will not refund any part of the sums paid for the elective placement.

6). I have started my elective placement in one clinical posting but would prefer to do a different
Elective placement in another clinical posting. Would I be allowed to do that?
FOM will not entertain any changes to an elective placement that had already started.

7). What languages are spoken in Malaysia?
English is the medium of instruction for FOM’s medical programme and is used during all teaching and
learning sessions. However, Malaysian patients are a mixture of different races and may speak English,
Bahasa Malaysia (the National Language), Mandarin (and many different Chinese dialects), Tamil and
Hindi. 

8). What is the minimum and maximum duration of the elective period?
The minimum duration is 2 weeks and the maximum duration is 8 weeks.

9). What if I fall sick during my electives?
You need to submit a health and travel insurance that is applicable in Malaysia in your name that covers
the duration of your elective.
