About Us

What is Emergency Medicine?
Emergency Medicine is a specialty focused on providing immediate care for patients with acute illnesses or injuries, including those resulting from accidents or sudden exacerbations of chronic conditions. It also encompasses ambulance services that transport patients to emergency departments, where they are treated and stabilised until they are either discharged or transferred to another specialty.

Unique Importance of the Specialty
The importance of Emergency Medicine is amplified by population growth, modernization, and globalisation. The increasing frequency of traffic accidents, industrial injuries, and infectious diseases, especially among older populations, underscores the need for skilled Emergency Physicians. Additionally, the rising occurrences of natural disasters, bioterrorism threats, and conflicts highlight the necessity for continuous preparedness and the enhancement of emergency care delivery.

The Master Program at Universiti Malaya
The Master of Emergency Medicine program at Universiti Malaya is designed to equip medical professionals with expertise and skills needed to thrive in this field. The program offers a comprehensive curriculum that blends rigorous academic study with practical clinical experience, preparing graduates to manage a wide range of acute medical conditions. The program emphasises advanced training in patient care, leadership, and research, aiming to develop competent and compassionate Emergency Physicians. The program’s duration ranges from a minimum of four years to a maximum of seven years, depending on the trainee’s progress.
