MASTER OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE (MEMMED)
In June 2005 the Faculty of Medicine of the Universiti Malaya introduced the Master of Emergency degree course. This course is fully supported by the Ministry of Health through scholarships or paid leave granted to applicants for the whole duration of each course. This support has enabled many doctors in Ministry of Health hospitals to acquire formal specialist training in Emergency Medicine, with a resultant increase in the number of practicing Emergency Physicians in the country.
The four year course, leading to the degree of Master of Emergency Medicine, provides:
The aim of the degree programme is to prepare our future Emergency Physicians for the trends and changing milieu of the 21st century, to provide training opportunities for future Emergency Physicians with diversity of talents and characteristics to acquire the necessary knowledge, technical skills, good judgement, maturity, attitude and values for the quality practice of Emergency Medicine.
| PEO 1: Emergency Physicians who will be able to apply knowledge and clinical skills in Emergency Medicine in the management of emergency patients competently and effectively. |
| PEO 2: Emergency Physicians who are able to utilise their professional, leadership and soft skills in Emergency Medicine to expand and improve the quality of emergency services relevant to the needs and healthcare policies of the country. |
| PEO 3: Emergency Physicians who are able to enhance their skills for professional and personal development through participation in continuing education and life long learning |
| PLO 1: Apply clinical knowledge related to Emergency Medicine in the provision of emergency care to patients based on best available evidence and clinical practice guidelines. |
| PLO 2: Perform clinical examination, procedures and treatment in a competent, safe and efficient manner for patients needing emergency care. |
| PLO 3: Plan and manage prehospital emergency medical services that include ambulance services, disaster management and emergency medical services in the community. |
| PLO 4: Perform duties to the highest standards of professional responsibility and adhere to ethical principles in the provision of emergency care for patients. |
| PLO 5: Practice good and effective communication skills with patients, staff and the public.> |
| PLO 6: Select, analyse and interpret accurately the appropriate diagnostic tests to make clinical decisions for treatment and management of patients. |
| PLO 7: Ulitise information technology skills in life-long learning and clinical services. |
The programme of study comprises three stages which are stage I in the first year, stage II in the second year and the third year and stage III in year the fourth year. These three stages are as follows:
Each candidate is required to keep a log book throughout their period of study to document tasks undertaken.
A non-Malaysian applicant whose degree is from a university or institution of higher learning where the medium of instruction for that degree is not the English language and where the applicant wishes to follow a programme shall be required:
To obtain a band of 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic).
