Department of Ophthalmology is located at 2nd Floor CRL Building and facing Department of Otorhinolaringology.
The department vision is to become an Institution of excellence in the field of Ophthalmology.
- MBBS – To teach on basic in ophthalmology so candidates will had enough knowledge of eye disease and know when to refer to specialist.
- In Post Graduate programme, our mission is to produce competent ophthalmologist to help overcome the shortage in the country.
- Nurses, Paramedical Group and public – to input the knowledge relevant to the group needs.
To provide excellent clinical service and to upgrade by providing sub-specialised services.
To encourage and increase the number of research projects and help contribute to the advancement of ophthalmology in the country
The department of Ophthalmology was established in 1964. The department is situated on the 2nd floor of the CRL building and housed the Head of Department’s room, main office, department’s library, seminar room , lecturer’s rooms and a Wet lab.
Since its conception, the department had been actively teaching the undergraduate students of Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. In 1992, it started its Master of Ophthalmology programme and since then had trained many ophthalmologists to serve the country. In addition, the department is also involved in the teaching of nurses, primary care physicians and sport medicine specialists.
Currently there are 13 lecturers/ophthalmologist and 2 Trainee lecturers in the department.

The Department of Ophthalmology, University of Malaya began conducting post-graduate teaching, leading to the degree of Master of Ophthalmology Degree in 1992.
The Master of Ophthalmology programme is a clinical coursework programme in which the research component comprises less than thirty (30) percent of the whole programme of study.

The Department of Ophthalmology offers a comprehensive subspecialty services. The eye clinic is situated on the Ground Floor of the Menara Utama of UMMC. All clinic procedures and consultation are done in this clinic.

All new patients that presents to the clinic will be creened by the doctor in charged on that day. Urgent cases will be asked to register and be seen on the same day. Non-urgent cases will be given an appointment on another day.
Follow-up cases are seen according to the specialist that was designated to each patient. In each team headed by a specialist, there are medical officers that are also responsible to these patients.
Operations are done through out the week. There are 2 elective OT, 2 day care OT and a fortnightly semi-emergency OT.
Ophthalmology in-patient cases are admitted to Ward 7TE, located at the 7th floor of the Menara Timur of University Malaya Medical Centre.
