The Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya is a joint academic and clinical department consisting of 11 academic lecturers, three clinical specialists, four optometrists, four medical lab technologies, and four support staff. The department is located on the second floor of Block P, near the NOCERAL building. Our focused area in this department are on ophthalmology services, education and research.
The department strives to deliver Ophthalmology services to patients at the facility in a manner that prioritizes safety, efficiency, and care while respecting the needs, dignity, and privacy of patients and maintaining the confidentiality of their personal data. Currently, the department hosts 91 medical officers for their Master of Ophthalmology studies that actively helping in achieving this clinical mission.
Apart from the Master of Ophthalmology, the department also offers Master in Research and PhD studies, open both to national and international students. Teaching courses are also provided to the other departments in the faculty, especially for undergraduate nursing and MBBS.
In July 2009, the department established the first eye research centre in Malaysia, namely the UM Eye Research Centre (UMERC) (https://umerc.um.edu.my/). This centre was created following a need for a robust research wing to facilitate the growth of technological advancement locally, as well as internationally. We have a lab space located at the level 11, Paediatric Building, UM Medical Centre. Currently, UMERC supports research in the areas of clinical ophthalmology, basic and applied science in ophthalmology, and epidemiology of eye diseases.
The department is also actively involved in community engagement programmes including World Sight Day, World Glaucoma Day, or outreach programmes to the countryside area, joint forces with the Ministry of Health.
