About Us

General Surgery ClinicThe Department of Primary Care Medicine is dedicated to excellence in primary care education, research, and healthcare delivery. The department offers comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including the Master of Family Medicine, Master of Medical Science and Doctor of Philosophy, to prepare students for the dynamic landscape of primary care in Malaysia.

Research within the department focuses on six key areas: respiratory diseases, medication optimization, men’s health, family violence, digital health, and shared decision-making. These initiatives aim to advance patient-centred care and empower self-care through innovative research.

The department also operates the general outpatient department at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, engaging with local communities to address healthcare needs and promote health education. Embracing technologies, the clinic system is now fully electronic and provide teleconsultation services to patients.

The Department of Primary Care Medicine at Universiti Malaya was established in 1987 to address the need for a general clinic for the growing patient population. Initially known as the Department of Primary Medical Care, it was renamed in 1989. The department offers clinical services and education to medical students, starting with three academic staff members and now boasting over 50 doctors. The department’s purpose-built three-storey building opened in 1992. Teaching in general practice is a core function, with primary care medicine introduced in the final year of undergraduate education and a clinical Masters in Family Medicine launched in 1989. The department currently trains approximately 80 clinical Master's candidates annually, with an alumni network of over 227 alumnus, many of whom hold key positions at the national level. The first PhD candidates enrolled in 2010,and the department has about 25 active research students at one time.
