- The Clinical Skills Laboratory (currently known as Clinical Skills Unit – CSU) was established in 1999 after a several discussions to build a facility for clinical training. The building is located in between Block B and E of the main layout for Faculty of Medicine and registered as Block D. In the beginning, only 1 floor occupied for the clinical simulation skills and located at the third floor of the building. Whereas the first and second floor has been transformed into wet lab for first year medical students and equipped with lab bench. The ground floor was dedicated to computer lab. Since that time, Clinical Skills Laboratory (CSL) has supported the needs of clinical skills training for undergraduates, postgraduates and professional’s course. Previous years, CSL also supported the Medical Officers specialise training for Ministry of Health (MOH) in Emergency, Trauma and Surgery in Simulation Operation Theatre. The simulation operation theatre was fully equipped with 1-million-dollar Patient Simulator MedSim Eagle, ventilator, medical gases pipeline and other setup needed for the specialise training. This facility which established in 2000 was the pioneer in this field in Malaysia and Higher Education Institutions. 
 

- Throughout the journey, CSL (now CSU) had involved in a few transformations and development in terms of clinical skills modules, equipment, simulator, as well as the functional room. CSU team also involved in yearly OSCE - Observed Structured Clinical Examination for medical students since 2000 in Examinations Ward and after 2012, the Universiti Malaya Medical Programme (UMMP) had replaced the OSCE with EOP – End of Posting by clinical department posting starting Stage 3.1 (year 3). The EOP involved clinical departments in monthly and bimonthly schedule. The EOP’s examination under Primary Care, Anaesthesiology, Surgery posting and Nursing Department done in CSU until now.

The Postgraduate programmes serviced by CSU:

1. Postgraduate Clinical Surgery (ENT, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology & General)
2. Master’s in Emergency Medicine
3. Master of Family Medicine
4. Master of Nursing
    

The facilities always have been use by the academic and industries to collaborate in research for simulation teaching technology.

Overview
The building’s top (third) floor includes four modular spaces for clinical and procedural skills training and a mock operation theatre. In addition, it houses different simulators: full-body manikins and specific models for part task trainer that allow learners to practise. The second floor comprises a simulated ward and labs that will be converted into a simulation-based self-directed learning area called The Arcade. Starting January 2025, CSU simulated ward located in second floor is ready to be use and will starts its function in stages prior to the bookings by the users. The arcade will start it renovations works soon after the final endorsement from the management of the faculty.

Functions of the Clinical Skills Unit

1. Assist in handling and preparing class for students and lecturers.
2. Assist lecturers for Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE).
3. Manage the timetable of room usage for all students in Faculty of Medicine.
4. Personnel aid in maintenance for technical and other equipment.
5. Provide place for courses or workshops.
6. Tutoring or teaching the students about basic clinical skills.
7. Provide hiring service for manikins and other equipment
