Sports medicine specialises in medical problems related to exercise and sports, including maintenance and improvement of performance for sports and exercise, as well as improvement of physical fitness, of people of all ages irrespective of activity levels. The Sports Medicine program was established to produce competent physicians who are committed towards the ethical promotion of sports medicine and towards the practice of evidence-based knowledge. The field of Sports Medicine is underpinned by knowledge in musculoskeletal medicine (e.g. injury prevention and management), applied sciences (e.g. psychology, nutrition, biomechanics), and exercise prescription for management of non-communicable diseases underpins.

To develop the Department of Sports Medicine, University of Malaya as a world renowned entity that offers comprehensive health services, education, and research.

The Master of Sports Medicine program was first introduced for the academic session 1996/1997. It started entirely as on-the-job training clinical program with a research component under the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. With the Sports Medicine Unit having officially established on 1st January 2003, the Master of Sports Medicine program then became a full-fledged clinical program under the Dean’s office of Faculty of Medicine. The role of the department is to oversee the administrative aspects of teaching, learning, research and clinical service in sports medicine.

The equipment available at the Sports Medicine Unit include:

  1. Body Impedance Analysis machine
  2. Isokinetic machine
  3. Cardiopulmonary testing machine + Treadmill
  4. Biodex stability testing machine
  5. Ultrasound machine
  6. Electrocardiography machine
  7. Gym equipments

Education:

  • Increase the students' intake for upcoming sessions.
  • Recruitment of international students for postgraduate clinical and research program.
  • Introduce Sports Medicine fellowship programs such as Exercise Medicine, Clinical Cardiopulmonary Testing, Biologics, Musculoskeletal Medicine.
  • Conduct training of the Sports Medicine modules or courses for part-time students or employees in the sports industry.

Research:

  • Increase visibility of the Sports Medicine Research Group (SEMREG).
  • Carry out collaboration with the ministry of health, National Sports Institute, National Heart Institute, and other agencies (PDRM, TNB, INTAN) for mutual benefits.

Services:

  • Form sub-specialties for the field of Sports Medicine.
  • Working on combined clinic with other departments in UMMC such as MDT adult obesity clinic, Paediatric obesity--Sports Medicine--Dietitian, Gynaecology--Sports Medicine--Dietitian and Sports Medicine--Colorectal--Geriatrics.
