About Us

The Department of Internal Medicine is the largest department in the Faculty of Medicine, comprising all the subspecialties within the field of internal medicine, i.e., General Medicine, Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Haematology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Neurology, Palliative Care, Respiratory Medicine, and Rheumatology. It offers excellent opportunities for both undergraduate and postgraduate training as well as fellowship attachments. We are committed to innovative research and development, nurturing the future generation, all in line with the mission and vision of the university.

The Universiti Malaya's Faculty of Medicine was established in 1962 by Professor T. J. Danaraj, also the founding Dean and first clinical staff of the Department of Medicine. He was the only clinician in Department of Medicine until October 1, 1964 when Dr. H. O. Wong joined. Department of medicine continue to grow and Medical Unit in the University Hospital was established in the year 1967-1968. The first few specialties were cardiovascular, respiratory and neurology. By 1970, Coronary Care Unit was established. Department of Medicine gained recognition as one of the departments in Malaysia which consists of expertise in twelve subspecialties. Since, the department has continued to make significant contributions to medical education, research and patient care, producing numerous skilled doctors and professionals in varies fields in the subspeciality of medicine.
