MASTER OF PATHOLOGY (CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY)

The Master of Pathology (Chemical Pathology) is a 4-year postgraduate programme with the primary objective of producing competent diagnostic chemical pathologists for the nation. It is a clinical coursework programme in which the research component comprises less than thirty (30) percent of the whole programme of study.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEO)

PEO 1	Chemical Pathology Specialist who is knowledgeable and committed to lifelong learning in the field of chemical pathology via participation in continuous education and professional activities.
PEO 2	Chemical Pathologist who is Clinically and technically competent specialist in performing chemical pathology duties.
PEO 3	Chemical Pathology Specialist who effectively contributes to the delivery of the healthcare system of the country whilst adhering to ethical, professional and socially responsible principles.

Programme Learning Objectives (PLO)

PEO 1	Master the knowledge and concepts and principles of Chemical Pathology for patient care in a safe, effective and efficient manner.
PEO 2	Integrating practical skills for Chemical Pathology tasks.
PEO 3	Adopt social skills and responsibilities in handling Chemical Pathology tasks.
PEO 4	Demonstrate good professional values, attitudes and ethics in handling daily responsibilities in the Field of Chemical Pathology.
PEO 5	Communicate and interact effectively, display leadership features and be able to work teamwork with including all levels of chemical pathological staff, including hospital and patient management.
PEO 6	Identify and analyze critically and conduct scientific research to solve problems related to diagnostic services of Chemical Pathology.
PEO 7	Manage knowledge and information through the use of information technology in diagnostic Chemical Pathology services and shape lifelong learning culture.

Benefit

The course provides guided hands-on training with supervised apprenticeship experience in the practice of chemical pathology within a hospital laboratory setting. It equips candidates with competencies in the diagnostic evaluation and interpretation of biochemical and metabolic disorders using automated chemistry, immunoassay, chromatographic, molecular, and other ancillary laboratory techniques. The course also provides exposure to leading a chemical pathology diagnostic service, training medical and allied health professionals as well as acquiring fundamental research methodology skills.

Course Structure

1) The programme of study comprises two stages as follows:

Stage I encompassing:
One year duration and involves study in Chemical Pathology with short foundation rotations in Anatomical Pathology, Medical Microbiology and Haematology.

At the end of Stage I, the trainee will sit for an examination (Part I) in Chemical Pathology. Although the trainee can proceed to Stage II of the programme without passing the Part I examination, there is a requirement to pass the Part I examination within the first 2 years of the programme.
Stage II encompassing three years of study comprising:
Three years of advanced study in Chemical Pathology. During Stage II, the candidate will also have to undertake a research project and submit a research project report. At the end of Stage II, the candidate must sit and pass the Final (exit) professional examination in order to be awarded the degree of Master of Pathology (Chemical Pathology).

The non-citizens applicant who obtains a degree from a university or institution of higher learning who does not use English as the medium of instruction for the degree, are required to obtain the following minimum score:

Entry Requirement

The program entry requirements are as follow:
(1) Entry Requirements:

The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate;
and
At least (1) year of post-full registration clinical experience approved by the Senate.
and

(2) Other Requirements:

Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia;
and
Pass the prescribed entrance evaluation.

Intake Schedule

Once a year in the month of June.
