Infectious diseases remain a global challenge, responsible for millions of illnesses and deaths each year from conditions like diarrhoeal diseases, tuberculosis, HIV, COVID-19, and dengue. As environmental and behavioural shifts accelerate and microorganisms rapidly evolve, new threats emerge. In Malaysia, constant cases of enterovirus 71, dengue, rabies, and Chikungunya viruses underscore the urgency of the situation. Globally, rising concerns include avian influenza, SARS-CoV-2, Mpox, and antibiotic resistance. At the forefront of this battle, this department is renowned for its research, teaching, and diagnostic expertise. The department played a pivotal role in discovering the Nipah virus and led research on dengue, influenza, antimicrobial resistance bacteria, and more. The WHO National Influenza Centre is housed here, making the department a hub for infectious disease research and surveillance.
