Green@UMHealth is proud to announce that our Head, Professor Shireen Anne Nah, was featured in BFM 89.9’s special podcast episode, “Green-ing Healthcare for Our Planet”, in conjunction with World Environment Day on June 5, 2025.
In the episode, Prof Shireen reflects on the environmental paradox of healthcare—while the sector exists to heal and save lives, it also contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and waste production. She emphasizes that addressing this contradiction is no longer optional, but necessary, especially as climate change increasingly threatens human health.
The conversation also spotlighted Green@UMHealth’s practical efforts and campus-wide initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact. Prof Shireen highlighted how sustainability is embedded into daily operations, including energy-saving measures, waste segregation programmes, and sustainable food policies.
The podcast also touched on Green@UMHealth’s vision for the future: to become a leading hub for sustainability research in healthcare, both locally and globally. With a strong focus on innovation, education, and evidence-based strategies, the initiative aims to contribute meaningfully to a healthier planet and a more resilient healthcare system.
We invite everyone to tune in to this inspiring discussion and join us in championing a more sustainable, health-focused future.
