In Loving Memory of Emeritus Professor Dato' Dr. Goh Khean Lee
Born on 15 July 1956 in Penang, Professor Dato' Goh's academic journey began at St Michael's Institution, where he spent his early childhood years. He later moved to Kuala Lumpur, attending La Salle Brickfields for his primary education and continuing his secondary education at St John's Institution.
Following his passion for medicine, Dato' Goh gained acceptance into the prestigious medical school at the University of Malaya, where he graduated in 1980. Embarking on a career in academia, he joined the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Malaya in 1984 as a lecturer. Over the years, he ascended the ranks, eventually achieving the esteemed position of Professor of Medicine in 1998. During his tenure at the University Hospital, he pursued further specialization, earning the MRCP (UK) qualification in 1984.
To broaden his expertise, Professor Dato' Goh undertook training stints at the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow in 1987 and the University of Amsterdam in 1991. During his time as a senior fellow in Gastroenterology and Advanced Therapeutic Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in Amsterdam, he delved into the intricacies of advanced therapeutic endoscopic biliary and pancreatic work, acquiring invaluable experience in the field. His doctoral research focused on Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium responsible for causing ulcers. In 1997, Professor Goh successfully obtained his Doctor of Medicine (Mal) degree.
Upon returning to Malaysia, Professor Dato' Goh dedicated himself to formalizing and elevating the standard of the gastrointestinal endoscopy unit. As the Head of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy unit at the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), he nurtured the division and unit into one of the nation's finest, garnering an exceptional international reputation. In recognition of its excellence, the UMMC GI Endoscopy unit was honored with the prestigious "Centre of Excellence" award by the World Digestive Endoscopy Organization in June 2008. As the only unit in Malaysia and one of only four in Asia to receive this esteemed accolade, the UMMC Endoscopy Unit has become a highly sought-after training center, attracting aspiring gastroenterologists both locally and internationally.
Moreover, Professor Dato' Goh held numerous leadership positions of great significance at the national and international levels. His research prowess is evident in the sheer number of publications and citations he amassed, making him the most prolific biomedical researcher in Malaysia, with papers featured in high-impact journals. Throughout his career, he was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Outstanding Leadership Award "Tokoh" from the University of Malaya Medical Centre in April 2019.
With deep sadness, he leaves behind his beloved wife, Su Lin, a consultant ophthalmologist, as well as his daughters, Dr. Li Yen and Li Syuen, and his son, Li Han. Professor Dato' Dr. Goh Khean Lee's legacy as a distinguished scholar, visionary leader, and compassionate mentor will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know him. May his memory continue to inspire future generations in the medical field and beyond.
