About

Formerly known as Health Research Development Unit (HeRDU) was established on 15 November 1996 as a non-clinical special unit with its main focus being cross collaboration among clinical and non-clinical departments. It is also tasked with and to strengthen the health research capacity within the faculty. In the year 2008, HeRDU was restructured and renamed as Medical Education & Research Development Unit (MERDU). This is in line with the Faculty of Medicine’s vision to deliver quality medical education and develop research capacity in the area of medical education. The role of the unit is to provide governance, structure and implementation and maintain the quality and standard of the undergraduate medical programme, University Malaya Medical Program (UMMP). The detailed structure of the program can be found in http://ummp.um.edu.my/. In addition, the unit also manages the curriculum revision of postgraduate medical education whereby In 2018, MERDU designed and implemented the Master in Medical Education (MMEd), a fully MQA accredited programme. Faculty development on curriculum design, accreditation, teaching learning methodology, assessment and evaluation are also developed and implemented by MERDU plus research in various educational areas are also actively undertaken.

MERDU is a vibrant and enthusiastic unit which aims to: -

  1. Strengthen the curriculum development and implementation processes.
  2. Ensure the quality assurance of the programmes.
  3. Improve the student learning process and provide support for struggling students.
  4. Develop teaching and evaluation skills among academic staff.
  5. Conduct research, consultation and disseminate information in related areas.
  6. Engage in cross collaboration activities in related areas.

Undergraduate Programme
  • Curriculum
  • The University Malaya Medical Program (UMMP) integrates basic science and clinical experience with in-depth study and independent research throughout the years of medical school. The curriculum, UMMP, is designed to enhance students’ satisfaction with the study of medicine and fosters a lifelong commitment to investigation and cross-disciplinary thinking. We also provide basic clinical science education in the first two years with early exposure to patient care and the practice of medicine where broader emphasis on patient-doctor communication, ethics, and the art of medicine is introduced. The team is responsible to ensure the program is carried out smoothly and to always maintain the standards at all times.   • Assessments
  • The Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program designed at the FOM requires a fair assessment throughout their complete course. The same team is in charge in order to plan the complete study years and to focus on rational assessment. To ensure close monitoring of the policies and exam regulations are done, a time-to-time revision of these modules are needed in order to develop the program. Components such as Barrier Assessment, OSCE, Spot test, Supplementary, SDLs are all overseen by the team. At any stage the above mentioned faces an issue, the team will be the contact person.

  • Evaluation
  • The main functions of the Evaluation Team are to collect and analyse students’ and lecturers' feedback on the program, to understand the impact of the program on student learning, to provide data for further improvement, and to produce reports on the effectiveness of the program in fulfilling the criteria of accreditation. The team also provides professional training to students in providing constructive feedback by organizing workshops regularly. The team plays an important role in managing the Mentor-Mentee and Academic Advisor programs of the Faculty of Medicine. The Mentor-Mentee and Academic Advisor programs aim to help students in their journey to become competent and professional doctors.

  • Master of Medical Education is an accredited Master level programme in medical education. This programme is designed for professionals in the field of medicine and health professions to develop knowledge and skills in education.   • Faculty Development Programme (FDP)
  • Faculty Development Programmes have been developed and implemented to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning, assessments and accreditation aimed at creating opportunities for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in Health Professional Education were initiated in 2016, under the Medical Education and Research, Development Unit (MERDU) at Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. The faculty development team comprises a diverse group of scholars, medical educators and health professionals who are trained and willing to support faculty members in their multiple roles.

Support
  • E-Learning
  • IT technical support works closely with all academicians, students and administrative staffs of The Faculty of Medicine (FOM) in order to design, create, evaluate and manage the Learning Management System (LMS) - Spectrum, Microsoft 365 Suite and Google Tools required for teaching and learning component of the University Malaya Medical Program (UMMP). Hence, the team is responsible to be the first line of support for any glitches or issues related to the above tools and we provide solutions to ensure a smooth application of these tools for the program. The team also provides training and guidelines on the processes needed to all members of the faculty in order to manage and conduct classes as per Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the program.
