The Department of Molecular Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine is an amalgamation of the Department of Biochemistry, which has long been apart of the faculty (since 1963), and the Division of the Biomedical Science Honours degree programme. It was in 2002 that a merger was arranged between the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Science Programme, leading to the establishment of the new Department of Molecular Medicine.
The Department offers courses for students enrolled for a degree in Medicine (M.B.B.S), Dentistry (B.D.S),Pharmacy (B.Pharm.), Nursing (B.Nursing), Biomedicine (B.Biomed.Sc), Medical Lab Technology (Diploma MLT), as well as postgraduate degrees by course work (as part of Masters programs in the various subspecialities of medicine registered at the Faculty of Medicine and other Faculties) and by research (Masters in Medical Sciences, and Ph.D.). We also offer training to undergraduate students, from our University and also from other Colleges and Universities, who wish to undertake a short research project as part of their undergraduate course.
Postgraduate Masters and Ph.D. students are registered with the University’s Institute of Graduate Studies (http://ips.um.edu.my), but conduct full-time research at the Department, supervised by either one or more academic staff. Our facilities are always evolving to accommodate the latest innovations in research. Many of our staff are involved in collaborative research with staff from clinical and other departments in this Faculty as well as other Faculties and other Universities. Apart from the many Malaysian postgraduate students who have passed this portal on their way to greater heights in their individual careers, foreign students from all over the world have also obtained their degrees here. At present, we have students from many parts of the world conducting research and learning side by side with Malaysian counterparts.
At the moment, the department has 23 academic staff (7 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 11 Senior Lecturers, 2 Lecturer, 1 Trainee Lecturers and 4 Tutors) and 20 supporting staff. There are 51 post-graduate research students (including 12 international students) pursuing their higher degrees in various laboratories at the department.
