Appoximately 18,500 outpatients and 6,000 in patients are seen per year. From a modest four general paediatric wards, the department has grown to a 130 – beded unit which also boasts a 10 – beded paediatric intensive care unit, oncology services day care (ward, and research laboratory), a haemopoeitic stem cell transplantation unit and special care nursery/neonatal ICU.

Since 1966, the department has seen growth in the number of academic and support staff, in tandem with the development of various paediatric subspecialities. A new maternal and child health block for the hospital is expected to be completed under the ninth Malaysian Plan (9MP). Its hope that the improvement in infrastructure and in individual subspecialities will spur the continued growth of the department to greater heights.
