The Continuing Biomedical Imaging Education (CBIE) wing of the Department started with short ultrasound courses run by the then UMMC Ultrasound Training Centre in 1997. Realising the importance and progress of medical imaging in medicine that goes beyond ultrasound, it was expanded to CBIE with the aim to conduct imaging related educational activities and courses for radiologists and trainee radiologists, general practitioners, physicians from other fields of interest, radiographers and sonographers. The courses conducted have had excellent response and participation from near and far and CBIE courses conducted throughout the year gives an opportunity for both staff and students of both the academic and the hospital side of the Department to participate and contribute in its activities.
Thanks to the efforts of Professor Basri Johan Jeet Abdullah and Professor Ng Kwan Hoong, the Department of Biomedical Imaging has its own journal, the Biomedical Imaging and Intervention Journal (BIIJ). The first issue was published in July 2005 to meet the challenges of biomedical imaging and intervention facing the allied sciences community by providing a new avenue for discussion and exchange of viewpoints. It is an online open access peer reviewed medical journal published quarterly. BIIJ’s running costs are met by donations from regional and international biomedical imaging industry and the University of Malaya. The journal also receives support from many regional associations and societies, and in turn become the official publication of them. As of 2010, BIIJ is the official publication of the ASEAN Association of Radiologists, ASEAN Society of Interventional Radiology, Asia-Oceania Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics, Asian Oceania Society of Radiology, College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine Malaysia, Southeast Asian Federation of Organisations of Medical Physics and the South East Asian Association of Academic Radiologists.
